- Allergy information
-
If you have a sesame allergy, unfortunately you will need to stay away from all of our products. Every Seed + Mill product contains sesame seeds.
If you have a nut allergy:
Halva: some of our halva flavors include nuts. We also have nuts at our Chelsea Market store as toppings to our halva. So, unfortunately, we cannot guarantee that there will never be any cross contamination.
Tahini: our tahini is all made in a nut free facility.
Spices: our spices are blended in a facility that also handles nuts. While our blends do not contain any nuts, we cannot guarantee that there will never be any cross contamination.
All of our products are gluten free and egg free. Our chocolate flavored halva contains soy lecithin, which helps with emulsification of the chocolate when it’s melted (i.e. it makes the chocolate more ‘pourable’).
Tahini: Our tahini contains only sesame seeds. It is nut free, soy free, gluten free, dairy free, kosher and organic.
Please reach out with allergy questions and we will reply with more specific information.

- Are your products kosher?
-
It's complicated...
Our halva and tahini are made in Israel in a kosher certified factory.Tahini: Our tahini is made in a facility that is certified kosher by OU. All packaging is marked kosher.
Halva: Our whole cakes, halva loaves and pre-packed 8oz boxes of halva that we sell as part of gift sets and to other retailers are all made in a facility that is certified kosher by the Rabbinate of Ashdod. All packaging is marked kosher.
Please email us for the certification documents, if needed.PLEASE NOTE: The halva slices that we cut to order at our Chelsea Market store (in 0.25, 0.5lb etc.) are made under the same kosher supervision as our sealed pre-packed halva. However, our Chelsea Market store does not have its own independent kosher certification. These halva slices are individually wrapped, but not marked kosher.
Our spice blends are not kosher certified. - What is tahini?
-
Tahini comes from the Arabic word, ‘Tahana’, meaning to grind! Tahini is made of ground sesame seeds and that’s it! It is a versatile nutritious ingredient that has been used for centuries, especially in the Middle East, Mediterranean and Asia regions! It’s even listed as an ingredient in Kitab Wasf al-Atima al-Mutada, an Arabic cookbook from the 13th century!
- What makes Seed + Mill tahini different?
-
Seed + Mill delivers the freshest, creamiest tahini, made possible by high quality sesame seeds that are precisely roasted for superior flavor. Our sesame is recognized for its sweetness, as well as the ratio of oil to fiber, giving it a smooth and pourable texture when ground. By making our tahini in smaller batches, we ensure freshness. We take pride in the fact that our tahini is organic, non-GMO, Kosher and woman-owned.
- What is the nutritional information for tahini?
-
You can find the nutritional breakdown for our tahini jars here.
- What can I make with tahini, other than hummus?
-
Where do we start?! So many things! We actually love tahini as a sweet food ingredient as well as savory. Take a look at our Instagram or recipes here for inspiration.
- What else do you add to your tahini?
-
Absolutely nothing! Our tahini is pure sesame and that’s it. No added oils, salt, palm oil or other unnatural ingredients. It is a true superfood!
- Is your tahini raw?
-
No, we roast the organic sesame seeds before grinding them into a sesame paste. We do not add any other ingredients to the jar.
- How long does tahini last? Does it need to be refrigerated?
-
Unopened tahini lasts for up to 18 months when stored in a cool, dry place. We generally recommend using your tahini within 12 months and storing it in the fridge to maintain freshness and slow the separation of natural oil in the sesame seeds, which may start to occur after a few months. However, tahini is shelf stable out of the fridge whether it is open or unopened. If you notice that your tahini has a layer of oil at the top, that doesn’t mean it’s gone bad! All you need to do is stir the jar. You can also safely store your tahini in a cool pantry.
- My jar of tahini has separated. What do I do?
-
Our tahini is made with all natural ingredients, meaning that you might notice some separation of the natural sesame oil from the fibrous part of the seed. This gradually happens over time to all natural seed and nut butters. If you see some oil at the top of your jar, just stir everything back together and it will taste delicious! If you find that stirring it doesn’t do the trick, you can also place the contents of the jar in an immersion blender until it is smooth and creamy again and place back in the original jar.
- Why are there some dark specs at the bottom of my tahini jar?
-
Sesame seeds are not all the same color! We also roast the seeds before grinding them, which means you might have some color differentiation from seed to seed, meaning that a few darker specs often appear in our jars of tahini. This is completely natural, safe to eat and will not impact taste or quality.
- What is halva?
-
Halva means ‘sweet’ in Arabic and is made by combining sugar and tahini. It is a flaky, sweet, melt in your mouth textural sensation! Depending on where you come across it, it goes by many names, such as Halvah, Halava or Halawei!
- Why is Seed + Mill halva special?
-
Seed + Mill brings a new standard to halva, a traditional middle eastern sweet. Our halva is completely handmade to deliver an incredibly unique flakey texture. Made from high-quality seeds, we pride ourselves on making halva that is naturally palm oil free, gluten free, vegan and Kosher.
- What is the nutritional information for halva?
-
You can find the nutritional information for our halva here. Please note this will vary a tiny bit per halva flavor.
- How long does halva last? Does it need to be refrigerated?
-
Halva lasts for 4-6 months when stored in a cool, dry place, but we hope you eat your halva before then! Halva does not require refrigeration for food safety reasons. In fact, it has been sold for centuries in the hot desert sun in the Middle East! However, we do recommend keeping it cool in the fridge or a temperature controlled pantry to try to delay the natural separation of oil. While oily halva doesn’t always look great, it is a sign that we are only using natural ingredients and if we're being honest, we actually prefer to eat our halva on the softer side anway!
- Can I freeze halva?
-
We don’t recommend freezing halva, as it may damage the delicate, flaky texture when it defrosts.
- Why is my halva oily or soft?
-
We only use natural ingredients in our products, which means that sometimes the natural sesame oil will leak. This is nothing to worry about. If you want to know the truth, we actually prefer our halva eaten a little on the oily side! But, if it’s bothering you, the oil will be easily reabsorbed if you place it in the fridge for an hour or two. Or, you can slice off the edge and find perfectly ‘unoily’ halva inside! Either way, it is safe to eat and will taste great!
- How will your halva be packaged and how should I store it?
-
The halva that we cut at Chelsea Market will come packed in a specially designed wrapping paper that is 100% recyclable, oil resistant and impermeable. Inspired by nature, our halva paper is made by a company called Ovtene that is the first food packaging to restrict the growth of bacteria. You can leave the halva in the paper it is wrapped in or transfer it into an airtight container. We also sell small 8oz boxes of halva that we ‘pre-pack’ in our factory. The boxes are 100% recyclable. You can safely leave your halva in this container for up to 12 months or transfer to an alternative airtight container, if preferred.
